The Problem Statement
Choosing the right skincare and makeup products is confusing for many consumers due to the overwhelming options and complex ingredient lists. People struggle to understand which products are suitable for their skin and which may cause concerns. Existing tools contribute to this confusion by overcomplicating the process, forcing users to navigate back and forth between multiple websites. This not only proves time-consuming but also takes away from the overall enjoyment of the shopping experience.
Clearify was developed to address this issue by offering a user-friendly and accessible solution. Unlike other tools that complicate the process, Clearify streamlines the experience by providing a seamless integration within the user's browser. With Clearify, users can obtain a comprehensive product analysis with just a simple click of a button. This accessibility enhances the overall shopping experience, allowing users to make informed decisions without the hassle of navigating through various platforms. The goal is to empower users with the information they need right at their fingertips, creating a more enjoyable and efficient shopping journey for skincare and makeup products.
Research and Analysis
Market Research
We started by looking at other ingredient analysis apps like Skin Carisma, INCI Decoder, and EWG, to understand what works in the market and how other competitors conduct their analysis.
User Research
We then tried to study our target audience and understand what our users want from our product and what their needs and goals are. We sent out a survey on Google Forms and got around 30 responses, based on which we found that:
94.7% of survey respondents would use an extension that made the skincare research process easier
72.7% of survey respondents rated 4 or higher in the importance of comprehending skincare contents
Over 50% of survey respondents rated 2 or below in their current knowledge of the impact of products on their skin
Survey respondents indicated that they were mainly concerned with two types of things: first, the impact of the product on their skin including acne control, moisturizing, UV protection, etc., and second, the specific ingredients present in the product like niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, alcohol, etc.
